Both physiotherapists at MozgásKlinika Retek utca, in Budapest’s 2nd district, list rehabilitation after surgery among their areas of interest, and one of them also lists preparation before surgery. This article shows how the work is built up. What you should do is always decided by your surgeon’s instructions and by the examination.

Why come before the operation?

According to the clinic, physical therapy and movement therapy can also be part of preparation before surgery. During preparation the physiotherapist gets to know your condition, so after the operation you can continue from a known starting point.

What should you bring?

At the start of the first visit the physiotherapist looks at the findings you bring. After surgery these are typically the discharge summary and the imaging reports. If your doctor has given you written instructions on loading, bring those too.

How does rehabilitation start?

With a first assessment, even if you have already been treated in hospital or elsewhere. In the 60-minute session the physiotherapist talks through your complaints, examines you, draws up your therapy plan, and treatment starts in the same session.

What are the stages?

The plan follows the five levels of the MozgásPiramis®:

  1. treating pain and the current complaint;
  2. restoring the necessary joint range of motion;
  3. developing muscle strength and capacity;
  4. building functional stability and movement control;
  5. returning to everyday, work or sporting load.

Your current functional condition decides which level you are on. The time since the operation alone does not.

Which treatments may you receive?

  • Physiotherapy: the active, consciously built part of rehabilitation.
  • Manual therapy: hands-on treatment to increase range of motion.
  • Physical therapy: device-based treatment to reduce pain and muscle tension and to support regeneration; at this clinic as part of a combined treatment.

How long does it take?

This cannot be said in advance. After the examination the physiotherapist tells you roughly how long therapy may take, but the number of sessions depends on how you respond and on the professional assessment.

And sport?

If your goal is to return to sport, load is increased gradually on the upper levels of the pyramid. The article on returning to sport after an injury covers this. All treatments are listed on the services page.
